Mazzone on Copynorms
Jason Mazzone (Brooklyn) has the following reaction regarding this post on copynorms:A further reason, I suspect, the RIAA lawsuits might increase illegal copying is that they publicize the extent to which people are already violating copyright. People tend to follow laws to the extent they perceive others are law-abiding. By spreading information about illegal activity, the RIAA litigation (and the newspaper reports about illegal copying it has generated) will bring some group of otherwise law abiding individuals to decide, "Well, if so many other people are copying, I may as well copy also." This sentiment will be particularly strong if the perceived risk of being caught is, as the RIAA litigation itself demonstrates, small.
